Character history:

Toshiko was born in London but moved to Japan when she was two, where she lived with her parents and grandmother for the earliest years of her life. A few years later she and her parents moved back to England, where her parents both joined the Royal Air Force. Toshiko grew up in the UK and after graduating university she was recruited by the Ministry of Defence.

Because of her position and access to sensitive information, Toshiko came to the attention of a terrorist organization, who kidnapped her mother and forced Toshiko to steal the designs for a sonic modulator, as well as build the device. Her espionage was discovered by UNIT and she was imprisoned with an indefinite sentence and suspended human rights. She was rescued from this by Captain Jack Harkness, who arranged for her to work for Torchwood Three for a minimum of five years in exchange for her freedom.

For the next 3-4 years, Toshiko worked for Torchwood, becoming a valued member of the team. She always felt especially close to Dr Owen Harper, whom she developed romantic feelings for, though these were generally unrequited. However she also often felt isolated from the group, particularly after Gwen Cooper joined the team. This feeling of isolation, paired with frustration over her crush on Owen, allowed her to be taken advantage of by an alien masquerading as a human woman named Mary. Toshiko became romantically involved with Mary and also used a talisman given to her by Mary to read the thoughts of those around her. She eventually recognized that this was dangerous, but was still greatly hurt when Jack arranges for Mary’s death.

Another important experience to Toshiko while working at Torchwood was the one day a year she spent with Tommy Brockless, a soldier who had been frozen by Torchwood back in 1918. Toshiko also pursues a romantic relationship with Tommy; however, it ends when he finally was sent back in time to heal the Rift and eventually be executed for cowardice. However, in the aftermath of this, Toshiko found common ground with Owen, who had also fallen in love with time traveler, only to have her return to the past. Eventually, Owen even agreed to go on a date with Toshiko, to see if anything would happen.

And then she found herself in Glaxcin.

(For those familiar with Torchwood, Toshiko is coming out of canon from the middle of the episode “Reset,” and thus in her canon Owen has not died/been brought back from the dead).

Character personality:

Toshiko is a very polite and soft-spoken most of the time. She tends to come across as shy and introverted, though once she is comfortable with a person she has no trouble talking to them and telling them what she thinks.

She is brilliant with mathematics, able to understand complex equations and even making corrections to the work of others without being aware that she is doing it. She is also very creative and an excellent technician, creating software and other programs that have proved vital to Torchwood.

Toshiko is incredibly loyal, especially to her family. She will do almost anything for those that she loves.

Physical description:

Toshiko is of average height and build. She has medium-length black hair which she often wears tied back. She often wears glasses and generally dresses in casual clothing.
